All 51 geographies (50 states + DC) are present — no state was dropped or reweighted. Burglary rates: FBI Crime Data Explorer estimates, 2024. Housing age and renter share: Census ACS 2023 five-year. Index: equal-weight normalized components.

District of Columbia tops the 2026 index at 80.7 — a 2024 burglary rate of 238.2 per 100,000, homes with a median build year of 1957, and 58.9% of households renting. At the other end, Idaho posts the lowest combined risk. Every state's numbers, the full ranking, and the methodology are below — journalists are welcome to the raw CSV.
