August lock reference

August Home is a smart lock company founded in 2012 in San Francisco, known for retrofit smart locks that replace only the interior thumbturn of an existing deadbolt, so the outside of the door and the original keys stay unchanged. August was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in 2017; in June 2023, the US and Canadian August and Yale residential smart lock business moved to Fortune Brands Innovations as part of the HHI transaction settlement. Current hardware centers on the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, with older Smart Lock Pro and Connect bridge units still widely installed. Locks are managed through the August app, which shares a platform with Yale Access, and integrate with major smart-home ecosystems.

LineFacts
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th generation)A retrofit interior smart lock with built-in Wi-Fi, so no separate bridge is required. Per August support, it runs on two CR123 (3V) batteries, unlike earlier models. Features include auto-lock, auto-unlock, remote operation, and DoorSense open/closed detection, all layered onto your existing deadbolt and keys.
August Smart Lock Pro (3rd generation)The earlier flagship retrofit lock, powered by four AA alkaline batteries per August's documentation, with Z-Wave Plus radio, DoorSense, and Bluetooth. Remote access requires the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge. Many remain in service, and August's support library still documents batteries, calibration, and troubleshooting for this model.
August Smart KeypadA battery-powered keypad accessory that mounts near the door and lets household members and guests lock and unlock with entry codes instead of phones. Codes are created and managed in the August app, with scheduled or temporary access for visitors.
August Connect Wi-Fi BridgeA plug-in bridge that gives Bluetooth-only August locks a connection to your home network for remote control and notifications. August's support pages document its LED indicator states for setup and offline troubleshooting. Not needed with the Wi-Fi Smart Lock, which has Wi-Fi built in.

Finding your model

Open the August app and select your lock; the model and serial number appear under lock settings/device info. Physically, the generation can be identified by the battery type and shape: the Wi-Fi Smart Lock is the smaller round unit using two CR123 batteries, while the Smart Lock Pro uses four AA batteries behind a magnetic faceplate. The serial number is printed on the lock body under the battery cover or faceplate. Original packaging and the order confirmation email also state the model.

Lock's LED is flashing redPer August support, a flashing red light indicates the batteries need to be replaced.Replace all batteries at once with the correct type: two CR123 for the Wi-Fi Smart Lock, four fresh AA alkaline for other models. Avoid mixing old and new batteries.
App status circle shows red or greenThe circle indicates lock state in the August app (locked versus unlocked); a Wi-Fi icon at the circle's upper right confirms an active Wi-Fi connection, per August's Wi-Fi Smart Lock troubleshooting article. No action needed; if the state shown does not match the physical bolt, recalibrate the lock.
App shows the wrong lock state, or the circle turns grey and nothing happensAugust support says the lock may need to be recalibrated, or the wrong deadbolt adapter is installed and is not moving the bolt fully.Run recalibration in the app. If it persists, remove the lock from its mounting plate and verify the adapter notches sit at 12 and 6 o'clock with the bolt retracted; a locksmith can correct fit and alignment.
Lock's Wi-Fi shows offline and does not recover after the network is backThe Wi-Fi Smart Lock should reconnect automatically after a network outage; if not, the lock itself needs a reboot per August support.Remove the battery cover, pull and reinsert one battery, and allow a couple of minutes to reconnect. If it still will not reconnect, contact support or a professional.
Repeated or implausible low-battery alerts shortly after new batteriesAugust warns that lithium and extended-life or rechargeable batteries can cause unreliable low-battery alerts on AA-powered models.Use brand-new standard alkaline AA batteries (except the Wi-Fi Smart Lock, which uses CR123 lithium) and replace the full set together.
Auto-unlock or app control works at the door but not away from homeRemote features require an internet path: built-in Wi-Fi on the 4th generation lock or an August Connect bridge for Bluetooth-only models.Verify the lock's Wi-Fi connection or the Connect bridge status in the app, and check your home network before assuming a lock fault.

Where an independent pro fits

Because August locks mount onto an existing deadbolt, the underlying mechanical lock still matters. An independent locksmith can rekey or replace the deadbolt beneath your August lock, fix bolt and strike misalignment that causes motor strain, calibration failures, and battery drain, select the correct adapter and tailpiece fit during installation, and get you into the home if both electronics and keys fail. Common questions

Why is my August lock flashing red?

August's support article states a flashing red light means the batteries need to be replaced. Replace the complete set at once: two CR123 batteries in the Wi-Fi Smart Lock, or four new AA alkaline batteries in other models. August cautions that mixing old and new batteries can cause leakage and damage the lock.

Do I keep my existing keys with an August lock?

Yes. August's retrofit design replaces only the interior thumbturn side of your deadbolt, so the exterior keyway and your existing keys keep working exactly as before. That also means a locksmith can still rekey the underlying cylinder anytime, for example after moving in, without touching the August unit.

The August app says my door is unlocked when it is locked. How do I fix it?

Per August support, an incorrect lock state usually means the lock needs recalibration, which you run from the app. If recalibration does not stick, August advises checking that the correct deadbolt adapter is installed; the wrong adapter can seat on the tailpiece yet fail to move the bolt fully.

What batteries does an August smart lock take?

August support specifies two 3V CR123 or CR123A batteries for the Wi-Fi Smart Lock and four AA alkaline batteries for all other August models. For AA models, August recommends standard alkaline cells because lithium and rechargeable batteries may not produce reliable low-battery alerts.
