Kwikset lock reference

Kwikset is an American residential lock manufacturer founded in 1946 and based in Lake Forest, California. Since June 2023 it has been part of ASSA ABLOY, which acquired Spectrum Brands' Hardware and Home Improvement division. Kwikset makes deadbolts, entry knobs and levers, handlesets, and electronic locks, and is widely stocked at home centers and hardware stores, making it one of the most commonly encountered brands on single-family homes in North America. Signature technologies include SmartKey Security, which lets a keyed cylinder be rekeyed in seconds with a small tool, and the SmartCode and Halo electronic lock families managed at the keypad or through the Kwikset app.

Kwikset product lines

LineFacts
SmartCode keypad deadbolts and levers (909, 910, 913, 955)Battery-powered electronic locks with a motorized (deadbolt) or manual (lever) locking mechanism, key override, and codes programmed at the keypad. Z-Wave and Zigbee variants connect to security and smart-home hubs. Kwikset's support library documents each model's beep and LED feedback patterns, which are summarized in the decode table below.
Halo Wi-Fi smart locks (Touchscreen, Keypad, Halo Touch)Wi-Fi connected deadbolts that work with the Kwikset app without a separate hub. Kwikset's product page states the Halo Touchscreen is BHMA certified with an ANSI grade of AAA, its highest certified grade performance standard for builders hardware. Halo Touch adds a fingerprint sensor. Touchscreen models include SecureScreen, which displays random digits before code entry.
SmartKey Security cylindersKwikset's user-rekeyable cylinder platform, built into most keyed Kwikset products. With the working key and a SmartKey tool, the cylinder can be reset to a new key in seconds without disassembly. Locksmiths can also rekey SmartKey cylinders or convert homes so one key operates all Kwikset locks.
Mechanical deadbolts, knobs, levers, and handlesetsKwikset's core mechanical line covers single- and double-cylinder deadbolts, keyed entry and interior knobs and levers, and matching handlesets in multiple finishes. Adjustable backsets fit standard 2-3/8 in. and 2-3/4 in. door preparations, and most keyed models use the Kwikset KW1/KW10 keyway family.
Aura and Premis connected locksAura is a Bluetooth keypad deadbolt managed from the Kwikset app within radio range. Premis is a HomeKit-compatible touchscreen deadbolt. Kwikset's support pages document their shared status LED convention: amber indicates locked, green indicates unlocked, and red indicates low battery.

Finding your model

Kwikset prints the model name and number on the packaging and on labels on the lock itself. On electronic models, remove the interior battery cover; a label on or near the battery pack or interior assembly typically lists the model (for example, 910 or 939 Halo). Mechanical parts often carry markings on the latch faceplate at the door edge. If the lock is enrolled in the Kwikset app, the model appears in the lock's settings. Kwikset's support site also sorts troubleshooting articles by model name and photo.

Where an independent pro fits

An independent locksmith can rekey Kwikset SmartKey cylinders (including resetting a cylinder that no longer accepts its key), key all of a home's Kwikset locks alike, install deadbolts and handlesets, and fix the door and strike alignment problems that cause SmartCode and Halo locks to beep and flash red instead of locking. Pros can also complete door handing and calibration on electronic models and advise when a worn lock should be replaced rather than repaired. Common questions

Why does my Kwikset SmartCode beep and flash red when it tries to lock?

Kwikset's support article for this symptom says the bolt cannot fully extend. Causes include incomplete door handing, latch and strike misalignment, a strike hole less than 1 in. deep, the wrong latch installed, or a disengaged clutch. Fix alignment or redo handing; a locksmith can correct persistent binding.

What do the LED colors on my Kwikset Halo mean?

Per Kwikset's support page for the Halo Touchscreen and Halo Keypad, in normal operation the status LED shows amber when locked, green when unlocked, and red when the battery is low. Other blink patterns tied to setup and programming modes are documented in the Halo installation guides on Kwikset's site.

What is SmartKey and can a locksmith still rekey it?

SmartKey Security is Kwikset's user-rekeyable cylinder. With the current working key and the SmartKey tool, the cylinder resets to a new key in seconds. Locksmiths routinely rekey SmartKey cylinders, and they can also reset a SmartKey lock whose key no longer works using specialized equipment, or replace the cylinder if it is damaged.

Who owns Kwikset?

Kwikset was part of Spectrum Brands' Hardware and Home Improvement division until June 2023, when ASSA ABLOY completed its acquisition of that division, which also includes Baldwin and Weiser. Kwikset continues to operate as its own brand with headquarters in Lake Forest, California, and its products remain sold through the same retail and trade channels.
